Outline Maps - Turkey Particularly due to this fantastic landscape, but also to the warm, but breezy mediterranean climate of the Turkish Aegaeis, tourists are discovering Bodrum more and more. Summer visitors are particularly British, Dutch and German. Wealthy Turkish families from Istanbul or Ankara own their holiday residence here. The peninsula Bodrum is famous for its crystal-clear sea, its beaches, its ideal conditions for surfing, skin-diving and all kinds of water sports. Down at the harbour, where the typical gulets are moored, active trading and promenading concentrates. The narrow, interwoven alleys - the geometry of which must be millenaries old - are packed with cosy pubs, bars and discos and of course all kinds of small corner shops. Bodrum-airport is about 40 km away from the city centre. When tourism still was a foreign word, the fisherman Halikarnas
described the nights of Bodrum as follows: Apart from numberless offers to deal with during the day or at night, the surrounding area of Bodrum invites you for excursions, e. g. the "Blue Cruise" along the shore. It's a pity the founders of these sailing-cruises, Cevat Sakir, Azrar Ercat and the Brothers Eyueboglu, did not live to see it booming to one of the most popular experiences. More than 600 yachts are here the main point of yacht-tourism in Turkey. Bodrum, the only harbour at the Goekova bay with a customs office, is not only a safe port with moorings. There are also several shipyards, where wooden yachts are built in the traditional construction style. Ferries ply between Bodrum and the Isle of Kos daily from
July till September, in the off-season only three times per
week. Twice a week a ferry goes to Rhodos. There are daily
ferry-boats to Altikum and Dacta, relaxing one-day-tours
to visit Didyma and Knidos. An unforgettable experience also will be a cruise for several days into the Gulf of Goekova or even a boat-excursion around the peninsula Bodrum. You also could go for a run in the car: along the coastal road you could enjoy all the pictorial coves. There are also inexpensive small busses (dolmus) or taxis going to all the beautiful places and beaches at the peninsula Bodrum: Bardakci, Guembet, Bitez, Ortakent, Karaincir, Bagla and Akyarlar. The swimming resorts Bardakci, Guembet, Bitez, Ortakent-Yahsi,
Karaincir, Bagla and Akyarlar are located on the southern
part of the peninsula. Windsurfers will find ideal conditions
in the Bay of Guembet. The gaudy foolhardy surfers are competing
with the elegant yachts in the Bay of Bitez as well. One
of the most strung-out beaches you will find at Yahsi. There
is plenty of room for undisturbed sunbathing for everybody
- still a little calm. It's a perfect dream and an absolute
sleeper. The most beautiful beach around the Bay of Bodrum
one could denominate the beach of Karaincir. Famous for its
powder-fine sand is the beach of Akyarlar. At Guemuesluek, in ancient times it was the port of Mindos,
you soon will pick up with somebody to enjoy the romantic
ambience of this wonderful landscape, e.g. while you have
dinner in one of those superb fishrestaurants you could watch
the sunset. Now and then you will pass windmills or round, roofed cisterns in which precious rainwater is collected and stored to come through the dry season. On the northern part of the peninsula the places Torba, Tuerkbuekue, Goelkoey and Guendogan are located in between of wooded hills, orange- and citrusgroves. On top of the hills, covered with olivetrees you will also find small windmills, which are still in use. Torba is a modern place and offers a beautiful marina. In contrast to it are Goelkoey and Tuerkbuekue small dreamily fishing villages with a few taverns from which you have a terrific view across the bay. On this side of the peninsula time stood still. Its peaceful here, dreamily and not quite real. On this lovely spot you actually can feel the relaxation. North of Bodrum the beautiful Gulf of Gueluek stretches
far into the land. Not far from here, northwardly, there
is Kiyikislacik, known as the antique Lassos, place of birth
of the mythologic "Boy on the Dolphin". Turkey is a real melting pot of European, Asian and African landscapes and cultures. Particularly the Turkish Aegaeis ranks as a paradise for relaxation, yachtsmen and friends of all kinds of water sports. In countless coves, many of them only to be reached by boat, you may dive into the crystal-clear water or just enjoy the chill-out. To sports fans the Turkish Aegaeis has a wide range to
offer. Almost everywhere you can get equipment for skin-divers,
surf-boards and even yachts for hire.
